Freda Payne was born in Detroit in 1942- an R&B singer she is best remembered for her big hit “Band Of Gold” #3 in 1970. All told she had 6 Hot 100 hits- with 3 making the Top 40. This was an anti-war song-Vietnam War. Body bags were still arriving back home- with the average soldier being 20 years old. What a shame. A war that should never have started in the first place. By 1971 the only ones left in favor of the war were the ‘my country right or wrong’- super patriots who had no problem with- your son going off and dying. Sad.
If she would have been on Motown I have a feeling she would have been huge.
Completely agree about that war.
First time hearing this. I like her voice.
