Since The Beatles Channel began four years ago- once a year they have been letting the listeners vote on the top Beatles songs and over the Memorial Day holiday- play the Top 100 listeners choices. On Monday afternoon I sat down and listened 100- to 1- it took 8 hours or so. The Beatles Top 100 was hosted by Peter Asher- [of Peter and Gordon- and the brother of Paulie’s old flame Jane]- Peter was around The Beatles in the 60’s- Paul lived at the Asher house for a while in the early days- and he has a ton of great stories [so many stories he has a book out on The Beatles] Anyway- here is the Top 100 Beatles songs according to the listeners. That’s a pretty good top 10, I’d swap ‘Let It Be’ for ‘Eleanor Rigby’ but that’s just me being picky. 🤘
I think they did a pretty good job- I am with you on that- there are some I think they are way off on but overall.. hard to argue.
It’d be better if “One After 909” was on it and “Hey Jude” wasn’t.
there are a few tracks that I am surprised didn’t make the Top 100- and some that I am surprised made it- like Til There Was You.
Til There Was You isn’t written by them is it? Seems I remember another version of it?
correct- it was a show tune.
wow, that’s a lot of good material. What a career they had. “In My Life” is a real surprise to me to be picked #1, but I must say of late it’s risen to very near the top of my own list – didn’t realize others liked it that much though. My personal 1-2 are “something” and “A Day in the Life”, so it’s good to see them both in top 6 and see so much George representation near the top. My only big quarrel is a losing one – “Hey Jude” at #3. to me, even if it had been edited (and it should!) it would only be a run of the mill song. But I know I’m in the minority, many people are blown away by it.
I just finished reading “Beatles From A To Zed” by Peter Asher. Very interesting little read.
How many songs total did they do, Hans? I don’t see a dud in the bunch. To have that many good songs and have so many more good ones that didn’t make the list shows what a phenomenal group they were. And this doesn’t even touch their solo stuff!
214 i believe if you count the abbey road medley of songs as individual songs.
I’m surprised at the Abbey Road Medley being so high.
Pretty good list. I love “If I Needed Someone,” even though it’s a simple tune, so it would have been in my top 10. Also “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.”
