1971 Pirates: Game 27: Friday May 7, 1971. Pirates [15-11] vs Los Angeles Dodgers [15-14] at Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles. Night Game. Bob Johnson [1-1] for the Pirates vs Don Sutton [0-3] for the Dodgers. The first of a three game series at

  • The Pirates defeated the Dodgers tonight scoring single runs in the 4th, 5th and 6th innings with the deciding run coming in the 6th inning off of Willie Stargell’s 13th and league leading home run of the season.
  • The starting pitchers gave up all the runs tonight- Don Sutton was the more spectacular pitcher striking out 10 Pirates while giving up 3 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks- but he ended up the losing pitcher and saw his record fall to 0-4 on the season. Bob Johnson went 6.2 innings for the Pirates-giving up 2 runs 7 hits 2 walks and 2 strike outs. Bob Veale came in and got the final out of the 7th innings before Mudcat Grant pitched two perfect innings at the end to get his 3rd save of the season.
  • Attendance- 44,275. Time of Game 2:25.
  • The Pirates improve their record to 16-11 and remain in second place 1 game behind the Mets. Next game tomorrow night.

  1. Stargell loved Dodger Stadium….I wish they had film on the two he hit out. I guess they went over the pavilion in right.

    • I can remember on the Pirates televised games – Bob Prince would always point out the spots where Stargell hit his mammoth home runs- it seemed like every ballpark had some far away spot where he put a home run- and Dodger Stadium was a favorite of his.
