1971 Pittsburgh Pirates: Game 21: Thursday April 29, 1971. Los Angeles Dodgers vs Pittsburgh Pirates at Three Rivers Stadium: 8:05pm. Luke Walker pitching for the Pirates vs Al Downing for the Dodgers.

  • The Dodgers win the three game series with a 2-1 victory over the Pirates. The Dodgers scored a run in the first inning – the Pirates bats which once again were fairly silent didn’t even it up until the bottom of the 8th- but a Dodger run off of closer Dave Giusti in the 9th was the deciding factor.
  • Both starting pitchers did well. Luke Walker gave up only 4 hits and 1 walk and 1 run- striking out 7. For the Dodgers Al Downing went 7.1 innings giving up 6 hits 1 walk while striking out 2. In the end it was the bullpen that decided the game. Pete Mikklesen came in for Downing with 1 out in the 8th and shut the door on the Pirates to gain the win- he is now 3-0 on the season. For the Pirates Dave Giusti struggled in the 9th inning giving up 3 hits and the deciding run. Giusti who has pitched so well for the Pirates this year has his first bad outing- is the losing pitcher 0-1 on the season.
  • For the Pirates 5 of the 6 hits came off the bats of Richie Hebner 3 hits and Manny Sanguillen 2.
  • Attendance a pathetic 5031 Time of Game: 2:04. The Pirates fall to 11-10 on the season. 3rd place 1 1/2 games out of first place. In the first six games of this 12 game home stand they are a disappointing 2-4. The San Diego Padres come to town for a three game weekend series and I am excited- I will be going to my first game of the season Saturday afternoon.
  • The Dodgers starting pitcher this evening- Al Downing- if the name sounds familiar it is probably because he is most remembered as the pitcher who gave up the record breaking 715th home run to Henry Aaron on April 8, 1974. It is a shame that is how he is remembered because he was a pretty good pitcher- 1971 would turn out to be his finest major league season- winning 20 and losing 8 with a 2.68 ERA.
