Yogi Berra was born Lawrence Peter Berra on May 12, 1925 in St. Louis, Missouri. He grew up in an Italian neighborhood called The Hill. His parents were Italian immigrants. He grew up across the street from another future major league player- another catcher who gained more fame after his playing career was over- Joe Garagiola. While Berra was playing Legion Ball- his friend Jack Maguire saw a newsreel about India and he thought the Berra ‘looked like a yogi from India whenever he sat around with arms and legs crossed waiting to bat or looking sad after losing a game. The nickname Yogi stuck.
