- The Pirates were shut out tonight for the third time in a week- the first two times against two of the all-time greats- Tom Seaver and Phil Niekro. Tonight though it was against a rookie Steve Stone appearing in his fourth career game. who had never won a major league game. Stone went the distance giving up 5 hits and one walk. Vic Davalillo who was subbing for an sick Willie Stargell had two hits for the Pirates. Catcher Manny Sanguillen had the only Pirates extra base hit- a double.
- Walked were the downfall for Pirates starter Luke Walker. Walker went 8 innings- gave up only 3 hits but walked 5. The Giants scored their first run in the second inning with the bases loaded- Walker- walked the pitcher Steve Stone bringing in a run. In the 5th inning a Willie Mays sacrifice fly scored Chris Speier.
- Steve Stone would have an interesting career- he would pitch with 4 MLB teams- including both Chicago clubs. His career year would come in 1980 when he won 25 games and the Cy Young Award for Baltimore at the age of 32. In 1981 he had an arm injury which ended his playing career. In 1983 he became a color commentator for the Chicago Cubs- a job he would keep through 2004. After taking a couple seasons off for health issues he returned to the booth for the Chicago White Sox- a job he still has.
