While I was not- and am still not a fan of Billy Joel’s throw-back doo-wop era period- with the album An Innocent Man- I will give him credit for taking chances- and not finding a hit formula and staying with it- and beating it to death like some other artists in this era did [ Not to name names but Heart, Hall and Oates, ZZ Top come to mind]- Joel had his biggest break through with The Stranger in 1977- a perfect pop album but he didn’t keep making the same album over and over. The albums after The Stranger- were rock, new wave and this doo-wop influenced. ‘Tell Her About It’ was the first and biggest of five hit singles from An Innocent Man.

  1. I personally thought ‘An Innocent Man’ was a great album, and I appreciate your point too that he didn’t keep churning out the same song over and over again (I also respect, although am a bit bummed out by, his decision to basically just quit in the 90s when he ran out of ideas). It is an oddity of the charts though that this one hit #1 and “Uptown Girl” and several other better-known hits of his failed to.
