A very unique and different western that has been released recently! (and also one of the best westerns from A24 alongside First Cow!)
“Ho for the west” -Silas
A brief word about the Director. Since this film came out, he hasn’t directed anything else but his voice in this film feels so well developed… And I was impressed with the dark comedic tones which switch to a more dreary dramatic tone swiftly!
A young boy who is deeply in love with a young woman ventures out in the west. Naive and drunk on love finds himself with Silas (Fassbender) a bounty hunter who helps him navigate the harsh landscape.
I love how the director showcased how harsh the landscape is. There is a scene where a couple robs a store which results in both being shot down. When two characters exit the building, the couple’s children await for their arrival to take them away. There is not a sense of hope whatsoever it is what it is in this world. People live and die just like they do here and I love the relentless nature of it all…
Despite the harsh nature of the story, there are a lot of comedic moments that break up moments like those and very heartful scenes with Kodi Smit-McPhee and Caren Pistorius have a complicated chemistry that is very easy to engage in! Additionally, there are a lot of dreamy segments in the film that I believe add more depth to this bloody fairy tale.
Hope you all are well and sorry for the lack of comments on some post… Currently in finals, but I cannot wait to see your film drafts!
Freakin’ love Michael Fassbender! Great movie! So overlooked…
He was great in Shame as well!!! That is my favorite film with him
His best one for sure. Completely vulnerable. I also loved his portrayal of Steve Jobs. Brilliant actor!
another one I’d never heard of… sounds like it might be good. You really have a way to find under-the-radar ones and that really adds a fine extra dimension to this event.
Thank you! I am almost a certified cinephile so I try to get others into unknown films!
How did this one get past me? I love Fassbender and “the kid” and I see The Hound from GoT in there also. Definitely my kind of movie. Good luck on finals and see you on the flipside!
GOT is one of the best television shows of the modern era! (Not counting 7-8 ew). I loved the hound in this! Thank you, these finals sure keep me busy!!
You’re welcome! My library has this one also, so I’ll be watching it soon.
Never heard of it and now I have a new duster to watch. Thanks
I think you will dig it a lot!
Like I said I need a new duster.
I’m a Fassbender fan, too. New stuff!
