Deep Cuts From 1971: ‘When I Paint My Masterpiece’- The Band. The Band and The Byrds were two of the best bands- covering a Bob Dylan song. Bob wrote the song in 1971 and it was first released by his friends and sometimes back up band The Band- on their Cahoots album. Dylan would later release it on his Greatest Hits Vol. 2 album. On The Bands version Levon Helm is the lead singer- while I love the Dylan original version- when I think of the song it’s Levon I hear singing it.
