Deep Cuts From 1971: ‘The Last Time I Saw Richard’- Joni Mitchell. Last fall Rolling Stone magazine had an update on their 500 Greatest Albums list- and Joni Mitchell’s 1971 Blue album came in at #3. Now it is a truly great album- but #3 all time? No. It’s not even in the Top 3 from 1971. Again this isn’t downgrading the album- but the Rolling Stone voters are out to lunch on that one. Top 25 I wouldn’t argue. I am not sure it is Joni’s best album- Court And Spark is pretty special too. Anywho- ‘The Last Time I Saw Richard’-is the last song on the album and written about her brief marriage to Chuck Mitchell which lasted from 1965-67.

  1. The kind of top rating chart I like is one where a vast # of people vote and the voting is set up by genre. Like you, I think Blue is up there towards her top album but I also like Court & Spark. Beyond that I don’t put much stock in ratings lists. They are more for people selling records as far as I’m concerned. All that said, it’s a damfine song.
