Deep Cuts From 1971: ‘ A Song For You’ – Donny Hathaway. Written and first recorded in 1970 by Leon Russell- on his first album- Leon Russell- ‘A Song For You’ has been called an American classic by Sir Elton John. The song has been covered a number of times over the years- by such great artists as Aretha Franklin, The Temptations, Ray Charles and The Carpenters. In 1971 soul singer Donny Hathaway gave the song his interpretation on his second album- Donny Hathaway. It was only an album cut- was never released as a single.
Beautiful song and he does it right. His voice reminds me of George Benson. The only other Hathaway song I know is the duet he did with Roberta Flack, “Where is the Love.”
look up ‘The Ghetto’
Oh, I *have* heard this one. Good jam.
I don’t know much about him… but this sounds great.
He was such a wonderful vocalist. It’s tragic that depression got the best of him.
i agree.. a great talent and a great loss.
not half bad but not Leon. One of Russell’s best. I was lucky to see Leon in a tiny theatre not long before he died… seemed weak physically but still a great musician.
Great version – really like the vocals. I only knew Leon Russell’s excellent original.
Donny melts my heart. The emotion he puts across and his storytelling through the tone of his voice was and still is second to none! What a don
