Steve Miller on the Howard Stern Show in June 2016 said that Capitol Records didn’t see a hit with ‘Abracadabra’- and didn’t want to release it as a single. It came out in Europe and went to #1 all over Europe -then Capitol released it in the US- and of course it went to #1. Miller has said that the song was inspired by- Diana Ross.

I remember my first reaction in hearing the song was it didn’t sound like a Steve Miller type song. This was the Steve Miller Band’s third #1- and last Top 40 hit.

  1. I loved this song ridiculously as a kid. I think it was because of the space age synth effects and because the lyrics were kind of racy. I guess I had bad taste in music as a kid but this was a step up from Air Supply.

  2. I hated this song when it first came out, as 1) I was not a big Steve Miller fan to begin with, and 2) I thought the lyrics were dumb. I offer as evidence “Abra-abra-cadabra, I want to reach out and grab ya”. But that melody was just so damned catchy that I eventually gave in and liked it. That said, like you I’d only give it a B though.

    • when i hear this song- i think of the summer job i had -when this song came out a fellow worker would sing all day ‘ abracadabra- i wanna reach out an stab ya.’…
