Billboard #1 Hits: #501: ‘Rapture’- Blondie. March 28, 1981.

  • Single:’ Rapture’ – Blondie
  • Record Company- Chrystalis
  • Genre: New Wave- Hip Hop
  • Written by Deborah Harry and Chris Stein
  • Time: 6:31
  • B-side:’Walk Like Me’
  • Album-Autoamerican
  • Grade: D
  • Peaked at #1 2 weeks in Billboard Hot 100. #5 in UK singles chart.

The first #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 to feature rap vocals. In an earlier post I think I made an error and said that Blondie had 3 #1 hits- they had 4- “Heart Of Glass” 1979, “Call Me’ and ‘The Tide Is High’ in 1981 and this one-which I have never cared much for. At this point I believe they started to lose the plot. ‘Rapture’ was over 6 minutes but it seemed like it went on for hours. Thumbs down. The album wasn’t very good either. It would fall into the category of most disappointing albums- because I liked their work up to this point. They would only have one more hit after this- and it was a minor one ‘Island Of Lost Souls’ #37 off of their next album The Hunter.

    • I don’t think as much as in the past. I recently saw the song that has been #1 for like 2 months have never heard of the song or the artist. and really don’t care to.

  1. Wow, I had no idea Blondie sang rap – not to mention this tune is the first no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 to feature rap. I think she does deserve some points for this.

I kind of like the funky groove of the song. My main problem is it’s too long and too monotonous. Cutting it in half would have made it better!
