John Lennon’s comeback single was at #8 and climbing on the Billboard Hot 100 when he was assassinated on December 8, 1980. It would hit #1 at the end of the year and stay their for 5 weeks becoming John’s biggest solo hit in the United States. The song was chosen to be the first single not because it was the best song on Double Fantasy but because it was the song best capturing the return to music after his 5 years outside of the music industry. John called it his ‘Elvis/ Orbison song- in the song he impersonates the singing styles of the two.

    • It was shocking to see his return I thought at the time his career was over. 5 years was forever at that time between albums.
