Ian Matthews was founder of Fairport Convention and Matthews Southern Comfort. His only other entry in the Top 40 was as a solo artist in 1979- #13 ‘Shake It.’ Joni Mitchell’s ‘Woodstock’ made three appearances in the Hot 100= Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young #11 in 1970, Assembled Multitude #79 also in 1970 and this version by Matthews’ Southern Comfort. Joni Mitchell’s ‘Woodstock’ was a b-side to “Big Yellow Taxi.”

  1. I like that jazzy intro and am surprised to see steel guitar in this — just never noticed the sound back in the day. Definitely like this version. They do it up right. Now I know 2 people who were in Fairport Convention (the other being Richard Thompson.)

    • Matthews has kept active over the years- although you never seem to hear his name anywhere. Had an album out as recently as 2018.
