I must admit that ‘Sailing’ really made no impression on me when I first heard it- in fact I was shocked when it went all the way to #1 on the charts- but over the years the song has grown on me. Christopher Cross had four Top 20 hits on his debut album- this was the second one- the first ‘Ride Like The Wind’ went to #2. Cross was inspired to write this song from a friendship with an older friend in high school who would take him sailing- to get away from his troubles at the time. Christopher Cross was a sensation with this song and first album- winning Record and Song Of The Year- for “Sailing’ and Best New Artist. I am not into Yacht Rock- but I do like this song.

  1. Christopher has a good voice and is a great songwriter, but he’s one of those for whom that wasn’t enough: he didn’t have that MTV look. Kind of like how people don’t adopt black cats because they don’t look good in pictures. Kind of shallow, if you ask me. He’s still around and still sounds good.
