- DON HENLEY: BUILDING THE PERFECT BEAST: 1984: 5 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: IPOD: ROCK: I was rather shocked when Don Henley’s I Can’t Stand Still album came out in 1982- I really liked it- as it turned out it would be the one I liked the least of his three 1980’s solo albums. In the fall of 1984 I recall my sister asking me ‘Have you heard the new Don Henley single- ‘The Boys of Summer? It’s great.” She was correct I loved that song the first time I heard it and nearly 40 years later it remains one of my favorites. I think Building The Perfect Beast is Henley’s best solo album- a shade better than The End Of The Innocence in 1989- but both are filled with the best work of Henley’s career- much better than the work he did with those dead beat losers he was part of in the 1970.s. Mount Rushmore:’ The Boys Of Summer’, ‘Sunset Grill’, ‘Not Enough Love In The World’, and “A Month Of Sunday’s’
I have this album too, and agree it’s his best. I especially love “The Boys of Summer”, “Sunset Grill” and “All She Wants to do is Dance”.
I agree Henley’s ’80s solo albums are his best. I guess if I had to pick one, I’d go with “The End of the Innocence”, though I also dig tunes from his first two solo albums like “Dirty Laundry”, “I Can’t Stand Still”, “Boys of Summer” and “Sunset Grill”.
hard to pick between those two albums- love them both.
