172. ‘Please Mr. Postman’ from With The Beatles. I know early on it seems like I am picking on The Beatles first two albums- Please Please Me and With The Beatles- especially some of the cover versions on those albums. ‘Please Mr. Postman” is a cover of The Marvelettes #1 single- which was history making as the first #1 in Motown history. The Beatles version is sung by John. A decade later The Carpenters would take it back to #1. The Beatles cover is decent- again if I were grading songs I’d have this in the C + range.

171. ‘Your Mother Should Know’- from Magical Mystery Tour. Paul wrote this and offered it up as The Beatles contribution to the Our World satellite broadcast in late 1967. Wisely The Beatles rejected ‘Your Mother Should Know ‘ and went with John’s ‘All You Need Is Love.” I imagine “Your Mother Should Know’ is one of the songs John had in mind when he criticized some of Paul’s music as ‘old granny music.’ This song which somewhat resembles Paul’s ‘When I’m Sixty Four’ musically- is attractive to the ears musically but lyrically it wouldn’t have taken Paul more than 5 minutes to write? Not surprisingly John and George had little enthusiasm for ‘Your Mother Should Know’ a song which Paul seems to have thought had potential.

  1. I like the BBC live version of Please Mr. Postman.

    Your Mother Should Know…
I’ve heard Paul say that each of the Beatles had veto power…if one person didn’t like something it would not be done…I wonder why this one and the few others were not vetoed? I guess he pushed hard…or they needed a song to finish the album.

    • you wonder- sometimes it may have been- we don’t care for your song- but we are up against a deadline and well you think so much of it- let’s go with it… beats my having to do something! or something on that order.

    • That is the only thing I can think of….and this song…I don’t remember George or John saying much about like Maxwell and Ob La Di….BUT I know they meant this song also when they made those statements.
