Deep Cuts from 1971: “Kooks” by David Bowie. “Kooks” appears on David Bowie’s excellent Hunky Dory album- was written to his newborn son- Duncan Jones. Bowie also wrote “Oh! You Pretty Things” for Duncan. The song is an imitation of early 1970’s Neil Young- because Bowie was listening to Neil at home when he got the news of his sons birth. Decades later the British indie band The Kooks named themselves after this Bowie song. Duncan Jones would go on to become a film director, producer and screenwriter. Duncan as a child was known as Zowie Bowie -his birthname was Duncan Zowie Haywood Jones.

Man, that family photo! People wouldn’t even know what to do with that image these days! So ace!
when i saw that photo- it threw me off a bit- that’s not Bowie– oh there he is!
Totally!
Great tune I frankly had to look up. I also didn’t know the lovely background story.
Duncan invoked this song when he accepted a posthumous award for his father’s “Blackstar” album.
I didn’t know that- thanks!
