My Music Listening Journal: Day 28: Thursday January 28, 2021.

- PHOEBE BRIDGERS: PUNISHER: 2020: 4 1/2 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: ITUNES: Indie Rock: I have heard of Phoebe Bridgers but had never actually listened to her. The 4 1/2 stars is a tentative grade- I can’t give an album 5 stars on hearing it just once- but on first listen this album is fantastic. The album ended up on numerous Best Of lists for 2020- and #1 on several. I can’t do a Mount Rushmore of songs- so many sound great on first listen. Her lyrics very personal- involving relationships. I know I heard the line “fighting over John Lennon” in one of them. Will have to give this her second album a lot more listens- and go back and discover her debut from 2017.

- IAN HUNTER: YOU’RE NEVER ALONE WITH A SCHIZOPHRENIC: 1979: 5 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: CD: ROCK: Today Rolling Stone magazine is a bad joke. Back in the 70’s it was still a music magazine and I bought every issue- and must admit that their reviews turned me on to a lot of great music. One review I still recall is the featured review- a rare two album review- one album was this one by Ian Hunter- the other a newcomer named Steve Forbert. They compared and contrasted the two albums and artists- Hunter around 40 at the time made a great album- which sounded like someone who had seen it all and been through it all- Forbert the newcomers album seemed fresh and rather innocent- he was of course soon billed as a “New Dylan.” I went out and bought both albums and over 40 years later I still enjoy both. Hunter by the way is still out there- in his 80’s. Mount Rushmore: “When The Daylight Comes”, “Cleveland Rocks”, ‘Just Another Night” and “Standin’ In My Light.”
I think her first album is quite a bit stronger – second one just got more attention because she was already on people’s radars.
will have to check it out.
I’m not sure I completely agree with our friend Aphoristical here, but yes, the debut is definitely worth checking out as well. She definitely a talent worth the hype.
Cool on the reviews for Forbert and Hunter. I bought the Hunter and Graham Parkers ‘Sparks’ on the same day. A good time for my music ear.
a lot of great albums around that time- the top 40 stuff may have been one way but the rock stuff from that era- great! You got two classics that day!
So much like you say. I had made a move away from the radio already. Certain radio.
