Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn Movie Review
Starring: Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as the Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as The Black Canary and rounding out the cast Ewan McGregor as the Black Mask. Some of you might be surprised that I went to see this movie. To be honest I am a little surprised myself. First of all, I am not a big fan of Marvel movies. I agree with Martin Scorsese that Marvel movies aren’t really cinema. I know, this is a DC Comics picture. DC Comics, Marvel Comics, the same thing. So, what possessed me on a bright, sunny, Sunday afternoon to enter a dark cavern in a multiplex and witness mayhem at its finest? Margot Robbie, that’s what. Plus, there isn’t’ a whole lot to choose from right now and I have actually heard good things about this movie. So, I hustled there inside and friends, I am here to tell you I am glad I did! This is 109 minutes of pure entertainment! A tip of the hat to Quentin Tarantino for some of the action scenes sure looked familiar. If you are going to steal, steal from the best, I always say! I don’t know much about the source material because I stopped reading comics when I was 12, but this movie has legs and stands on its own. Written and directed by women, with strong female leads, this movie is a towering monument to female empowerment. Lot’s a diversity on display here too. Visually stunning Gotham City never looked better as photographed by lensman Mathew Libatique, and a killer sound track that perfectly matches the action, this movie is solid entertainment. Two thumbs way up!
Hey, Ron! I think you still have REELY BERNIE selects on here. I’m not sure who chose this one, but I need to still check it out!
Oh, it’s Ghost Dog 🙂
Ghost Dog, I still have yet to see this one. I remember it was one of the few remaining in my local theatre while the pandemic was blowing up by the day. I’ll add it to my Watchlist!
I saw this one a few months back. It’s an action-packed extravaganza with lots of bright colors if I remember right. Robbie is a versatile actress that has gotten many plum roles (I loved her in I, Tonya!) I like the Grrrrl Power in it. McGregor was an appropriately slimy villain. I agree with Scorcese and you about these comic book universes, but sometimes nice for a change of pace. Good review, Ghost Dog!
I agree it was a nice change of pace, I have only seen a little of it so far, but I think they take the R rating too seriously. I hear f-bombs threw around with no meaning but to feel edgy but I still like what I have seen from it so far!
I haven’t seen this but, I have seen Suicide Squad. I agree. Margot Robbie is fascinating. I almost didn’t recognize her in the Tarzan movie.
Started watching a little of this a few nights ago! Margot Robbie will always be my Quinn! I love Mary Elizabeth Winstead in Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World! Also Ewan McGregor is filled with charisma in any role he takes!
What category is this film, just out of curiosity?
Comedy..
Ah. Thank you. I’m tracking everyone’s choices for future reference.
thanks for the heads up it was my error.
