Generally I don’t think it’s all that great of an idea to cover a song that had just recently been a huge hit -unless you have a different take on it. Ray Charles covering The Beatles- he did it the Ray Charles way. The same with the covers Aretha Franklin made of others hits. In 1968 Creedence Clearwater Revival had a #2 hit with ‘Proud Mary.” Solomon Burke and Checkmates LTD would cover the song before Ike & Tina did- but the Ike & Tina cover- is just as great as the original. In Ike &Tina’s hands it sounds like a different song. This single would win Ike & Tina Turner their only Grammy Award- for Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Group- they had been nominated seven times. It was also their biggest hit together.

I actually now like this version of “Proud Mary” more than CCR’s, which has been overplayed so much that I’m tired of it.
