The Beatles Top 60 Solo Songs: #12: ‘Give Me Love [Give Me Peace On Earth}- George Harrison. The #1 hit from George’s follow up to his great All Things Must Pass album- arrived in the spring of 1973. The album as a whole was criticized for being overly religious and received mixed reviews at the time. Over the years critics have been kinder and now tend to look at the album as a minor masterpiece. I agree- while it is maybe disappointing when compared to All Things Must Pass- it’s a pretty good album- and this single was well deserving of being the big hit it was. One of the highlights of the song which stick with you is the slide guitar solos of George.
During the period when George wrote the song he was devoted to helping refugees of the Bangladesh Liberation War- highlighted by the two benefit concerts he held in New York City and the frustration he was feeling in the business and legal issues afflicting the project.
Another beautiful tune by George!
Have you noticed this song begins almost the same as Mike Nesmith’s song, Joanne? I do adore this song and glad it made it to your #12 chart spot.
I will have to check that out…hmmm.
One of my favourite George songs. I love the sentiment behind it.
All-round great song… you have your work cut out to find 11 better ones from the solos.
What a appropriate song to pick giving the tensions and divisions of this time. He walked the walk and talked the talk. Good choice.
That didn’t occur to me- but you have a great point.
Great song.
