The Beatles Top 60 Solo Songs: #23: “Mind Games”- John Lennon. As a solo artist in the early to mid 70’s before he went into hiatus John Lennon’s singles were for the most part very good but not overly commercial to fit into the times. I still have more to go on the countdown from Lennon and that period but for example as great as it is- “Cold Turkey” or “Power To The People” were not going to rise to the top of the pops. John would be the final Beatle to have a #1 as a solo artist- and it would come in 1973. “Mind Games” I think sounds a little more commercial than the other two singles I mentioned- but still the single from 1973 peaked at #18 in the Billboard Hot 100 and #26 in the UK. “Mind Games” began back in 1969 as a protest song called “Make Love-Not War.” It wouldn’t be until 1972 that Lennon would actually finish the song- inspired by a book Mind Games: The Guide To Inner Space by Robert Masters and Jean Houston. The song was recorded in the summer of 1973 at the time of Lennon’s separation from Yoko Ono.
