Andy Gibb as pointed out in the recent Bee Gees documentary was briefly- before the release of Saturday Night Fever- even bigger than his brothers in popularity. His stay on top was brief but he wasn’t your typical teen idol- that no doubt helped sell some records to teenage girls but the difference between Andy Gibb and say talent less vessels like Shaun Cassidy and Lief Garrett- Andy could actually sing- he was a Gibb after all and he had a not so secret weapon- his brother Barry writing songs for him. This was the first of a handful of Gibb hits- his first three chart singles went to #1 and he had six Top 10 hits in a row. I like them all- to varying degrees- a guilty pleasure for sure.
Andy Gibb would later say about the writing process of “I Just Want To Be Your Everything”-
“So, once we discussed it all and got the deal together, me and Barry locked ourselves in a bedroom and Barry just started writing. When Barry writes, it is very hard to collaborate with him, because he is so quick. And before I knew it he was starting to do the chorus of [‘I Just Want to Be Your Everything’], and I thought, ‘Wow what a hook!’. He’s an expert at his craft. Within about 20 minutes, he’d written a number one record; and then we went right into another one, [‘(Love Is) Thicker than Water”
Hey, I gotta say it – yep, the A grade is warranted. It’s pop, but it’s pretty darn good pop music.
I adored Andy Gibb when I was a young teen. I was just shy of my 11the birthday.
Definitely a guilty pleasure of mine from the 70s.
Another one of my great crushes. He was gone far too young.
