Written by the great songwriter from New Orleans Allen Toussaint- “Southern Nights” was inspired by his memories from his childhood of visiting his relatives in the Louisiana backwoods. “Southern Nights” was a cross over hit for Campbell #1 on both the US country and pop charts. It was his 5th and final country #1. While his career would go on for nearly four more decades this was the last big pop hit for Campbell who would only have two other minor Top 40 hits after “Southern Nights.”
