The Beatles Top 60 Solo Songs: #39: “Stand By Me” – John Lennon. The original version of “Stand By Me” a song written by the famous songwriting team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller- with Ben E. King- went to #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1961. The song has been covered many times over the the years and to me the original is still the best- but a close runner up is John Lennon’s cover in 1975 from his album of old rock and roll covers- Rock N Roll. Released as a single- it went to #20 in the Billboard Hot 100. Lennon was usually great on covering old rock and roll singles- and Billboard magazine agreed with me, calling it the best cover of the song since the original. It would also mark the final appearance of Lennon on the singles charts for over 5 years- his next hit single wouldn’t be until late 1980- with “{Just Like} Starting Over.”

  1. Not a Beatle bias…I just lean toward this version more. Maybe it’s the first version I heard. That delay in his voice just wins me over…the versions are apples and oranges though really. I love the other one in it’s own way.
