The Originals: Songs The Beatles Covered: “Mr. Moonlight”- Dr. Feelgood & The Interns. “Mr. Moonlight” from The Beatles Beatles For Sale album- released a few weeks before Christmas of 1964- contained six covers- five were from well known artists- pioneers of rock and roll- Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Buddy Holly and a couple from Carl Perkins- this is in the deeply obscure category. The song was written by an American R&B singer-songwriter named Roy Lee Johnson and first covered by blues pianist Piano Red- as Dr. Feelgood & The Interns in 1962. The single wasn’t a hit. With The Beatles covering one of his songs Johnson was able to form his own band. He’s still living today- in his early 80’s. The Beatles version of the song- sung by John Lennon is well awful– was it The Beatles being funny or The Beatles just having a moment of bad taste as the rushed to finish an album for the record company- to get product out in time for the Christmas season?

  1. Hans I like Revolution #9 better than this. I like many of Paul’s junk songs better than this one. I have made a statement to friends…this is my least favorite track of the Beatles.

    • It is a puzzling song for them to cover. I will be doing a countdown starting in less than 2 weeks- I will only say this is certainly a strong contender at the bottom of The Beatles song list.
