- The Soviet Union’s Venera 7 became the first spacecraft to transmit data from the surface of the planet Venus.
- Former major league baseball pitcher Rich Helling was born on this date in Devils Lake, North Dakota. Helling won 20 games in 1998 for the Texas Rangers- he is one of only three Rangers pitchers to win 20 games in a season- the other two- Ferguson Jenkins and Kevin Brown. His career record was 93-81 with a 4.68 ERA.
