Rod Stewart’s second #1 in the US was a big on- “Tonight’s The Night” spent 8 consecutive weeks at #1- from mid-November 1976 into the first week of 1977- the longest run at #1 since The Beatles “Hey Jude” spent 9 weeks at #1 in 1968. The spoken french lines in the song were by actress Britt Ekland- Stewart’s girlfriend of the moment. Some radio stations edited out Ekland’s whispering because they were ‘too suggestive.”
Not one of my favorites from Stewart, though I do like it.
While I generally feel Rod Stewart was at his best during the early years of his career and I used to like “Tonight’s the Night” more than I do now, I still think it’s not a bad tune. The one thing he always has going for him is that cool smoky voice.
This was around the time when he ‘rode the shark”- one of his greatest songs I believe was on this album- The Killing Of Georgie”
Great song!
