- President Richard Milhous Nixon names U.S. Representative George Herbert Walker Bush- who had been defeated in his November re-election bid- the next United States Ambassador to the United Nations replacing Charles Yost.
- Former Beatle John Lennon releases his first proper solo album- Plastic Ono Band. Since the break-up of the band in the spring all four former Beatles have now released albums in 1970.
- Rico Carty of the Atlanta Braves who at the time had a .322 career batting average- fractured his knee and suffered ligament damage in a winter league game in the Dominican League. Carty would miss the 1971 season due to these injuries.
- The final project that Walt Disney had approved before his death in 1966- the animated movie The Aristocats premiered on this day in theaters. It would go on to be one of the most popular films of 1971.
- A broken gas line caused a blast in New York City at Ryan’s Bar- across the street from City Hall- nine people were killed and 50 others were injured. It would be ruled accidental.
