Arthur Alexander wrote and performed it the year before in 1962. The Alexander original made it to #68 on the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart and #10 on the R&B chart. In Dave Marsh’s book The Heart Of Rock N’ Soul- he ranks Alexander’s original as one of the top 1001 singles ever. He has been under the radar- I agree his version is the better.
