  • What appeared at first to be a routine freight car derailment near LeRoy, New York at 3:30 am- when 25 railroad cars came off the track- spilled more than 30,000 gallons of the industrial solvent trichloroethylene that seeped into the groundwater serving the wells of the Genessee County community. By 1991 the contamination from TCE had spread into 31 well sites and into two neighboring counties and the site of the spill would be added to the US Environmental Protection Agency’s lost of Superfund cleanup sites in 1999.
  • Ulf Ekberg co-founder of the Swedish pop group Ace of Base was born in Gothenburg, Sweden.
  • Dying at the age of 65- U.S. Air Force General Thomas Power who was the director of the U.S. Strategic Air Command during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
