Elton and Bernie Taupin originally had Dusty Springfield in mind when they wrote this song but she withdrew from doing it because her partner was ill at the time. A rather pedestrian pop song to my ears. Kiki Dee had one hit on her own “I Got The Music In Me” #12 in 1974.
I really loved this song back when it was a hit, but it was so overplayed on the radio that I grew tired of it. Now, 44 years later, I agree with you that it’s pretty pedestrian.
I am with you- when I first heard it I liked it- but I think the song wasn’t built to last. Pleasant tune but little else going for it.
What happened to her? That duo should have kicked started her career. That tune is in the Muskrat Love category.
It appears she has stayed active over the years- but not much success on the charts.
You have to admit it’s a catchy pop tune, but it’s also fair to say Elton John and Bernie Taupin have written much better songs.
Looking back on it-i know this was a #1- but the first sign of slippage in the career of Elton Hercules John?
I guess it’s fair to say John’s best period was the first half of the ’70s. I also really liked the “Too Low for Zero” album from 1983.
