Girls! Girls! Girls!- “Romeo And Juliet”- Dire Straits. “Romeo and Juliet” is my favorite Dire Straits song [which is saying a lot- they have a number of songs that I love}- it appeared first one their Making Movies album which came out in 1980. The song was written by Dire Straits Mark Knopfler about his failed romance with Holly Vincent- of the group Holly and The Italians.
from wikipedia-
The song speaks of a Romeo who is still very much in love with his Juliet, but she now treats him like “just another one of [her] deals”. Knopfler has both stated and implied that he believes Vincent was using him to boost her career. The song’s line “Now you just say, oh Romeo, yeah, you know I used to have a scene with him,” refers to an interview with Vincent, where she says “What happened was that I had a scene with Mark Knopfler and it got to the point where he couldn’t handle it and we split up.”
Never listened closely to the lyrics and never knew the story behind the song. A love like he has for her is not one you ever get over. Even there he wants her to come back 😦 Beautiful song and masterful songwriting.
The Dire Straits original is great but I came across that one in concert a while ago- and loved that version too.
I like Dire Straits a lot, but somehow never heard this. It’s a lovely and bittersweet song.
One of my two most favorite Dire Straits songs. I can listen to it over and over. I didn’t know it was written about a real romance. That makes it even more special, which I wouldn’t have thought possible. It’s my first time hearing this version. I like it a lot.
I like the emotion in this version.
Me too.
Love this cut
