- The United Nations General Assembly accepts membership of the People’s Republic Of China.
- The 1970 Miss World beauty pageant which was hosted by Bob Hope at the Royal Albert Hall in London was disrupted by women’s liberation protesters who hurled leaflets, smoke bombs and stink bombs on stage. Hope left the stage temporarily muttering “Who are these bastards” until police cleared the hall and then crowned Jennifer Hosten of Grenada as Miss World.
- Tom Waits performed his first gig as a paid artist- receiving $25 to open for Michael Milner and Claire Hart.
