Girls! Girls! Girls!- “Jessica”- The Allman Brothers. I couldn’t let this feature pass without playing my favorite rock instrumental- “Jessica” by The Allman Brothers. “Jessica” was written by Dicky Betts a tribute to the great jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. Betts wrote most of the song on his farm in Georgia- Jessica- of course named after his then infant daughter. “Jessica” was released as a single- it was the follow up to “Ramblin’ Man” which had went to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Although “Jessica” wasn’t as successful- it only went to #65- it has become a staple on album oriented rock radio.
While I’m a huge fan of great vocals, especially harmony singing, and as such no vocals can be a tough proposition, Jessica has to be one of the best instrumentals! When the music is so great, it does all the singing, and you don’t need vocals.
Its strange I am not against instrumentals- jazz is mostly instrumental- but when it comes to rock music I am not a huge fan of them but the Allman Brothers mastered the rock instrumental- I agree on this no vocal is needed!
You’re making a good point about jazz. While I don’t listen to jazz very often, when I do, it’s mostly instrumental, and the absence of vocals never bothers me! 🙂
So loved this, back in the day. Still do. Only later discovered ‘In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed’, which is different but equally excellent.
Did I miss Sweet Melissa?
Haven’t got to that one yet! But I have covered Jessica and Little Martha.
Good one Hans.
