This was Eric Clapton’s first hit single as a solo artist- up until this time Clapton was best known for his work in different rock bands most notably Cream. From 1970-1998 Clapton had 24 Hot 100 singles with 16 making the Top 40- his only #1 as a solo artist- “I Shot The Sheriff” 1974.
While I must have listened to it hundreds of times, I still dig that tune. I also recall I was less than impressed when I heard J.J. Cale’s original for the first time. Now I love it as much if not even more!
IIRC I heard him play this once on Playboy After Dark, but… Remembering how cool I thought it sounded when it came out.
He put some cash in J J’s pocket.
I always liked a comment John Hiatt made- after Bonnie Raitt covered a couple of his songs there when she was big– “her covering those songs put new tires on the tour bus”
