Sun Sounds: “Sittin’ and Thinkin'”- Charlie Rich. Sam Phillips said a number of times that the most talented artist he worked with at Sun was- Charlie Rich. When you consider some of the people who Sam worked with- Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Howlin’ Wolf, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison- that is saying a lot. “Sittin’ and Thinkin'”- was written by Charlie Rich- and is one of the best recordings he made at Sun. It wouldn’t be until the early 70’s that Rich’s music would become commercial- working with famed country producer Billy Sherrill. In some ways Charlie was his own worst enemy- he was a shy man- and his music was all over the place. Sam Phillips would say it wasn’t commercial enough- which doesn’t mean it wasn’t great. His best work was not the big hits- but his earlier work and his fine final album which had the jazzy feel to it- the music he loved the most.
Nice song. I’d never heard this one before.
