Sun Sounds- “Ubangi Stomp”- Warren Smith. While Warren Smith’s “Ubangi Stomp” didn’t hit the charts hit became a rockabilly standard. Like Johnny Cash- Smith grew up on a farm found is way to Sun after a stint in the U.S. Air Force. “Ubangi Stomp” was his second single release on Sun Records. Sam Phillips would say of Smith “probably the best pure singer for country music I’ve ever heard.. he had a pure county voice and an innate feel for the country ballad.” Like with Billy Lee Riley, Mr. Phillips regretted that he didn’t get more out of Warren Smith’s talent. Warren Smith died in 1947 of a heart attack at the age of 47.
Good rock n roll with fun lyrics.
There are so many great versions of this song (Sam Phillips was quite adept at getting a piece of the publishing pie). One of my favorites is by Carl Mann. Thanks for sharing the original!
This is really cool. I can’t believe it’s before the fifties.
Correction Hans: the song was recorded in 1956, and he died in 1980 at the age of 47.
Thanks for the correction I had 47 on my mind there.
I was curious that he would have recorded that song in the 1940s.
I had a buddy and this was his favorite song.
