- Born on this day in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada- Barenaked Ladies frontman Ed Robertson.
- Born on this day in Kansas City, Missouri -country singer Chely Wright- best known for her hit “Single White Female” which went to #1 on the country singles chart and coming out as a lesbian.
- At the California State Fairgrounds Race Track – on the last day of scheduled operation at that track- three drivers were killed in separate accidents during the 100 lap Golden State 100 USAC race. In the 50 year history of the dirt track there had never been a racing fatality until this its final day- the three drivers were- Ernie Burssell 27, Walt Reiff 41 and Jimmie Gordon- 26.
