Hans Remembers- Friday October 23, 1970- 50 Years Ago.

  • Gary Gabelich drove the rocket-powered Blue Flame to an official land speed record at 622.407 mph on the dry lake bed of the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah.
  • The Shrine of La Virgen de San Juan del Valle in San Juan, Texas -one of the most visited Roman Catholic shrines in the United States was destroyed by fire after a pilot deliberately flew his airplane onto its roof. 230 people were in the complex when it happened but the only person to die- was the pilot. A new shrine would open in 1980.
  • Charles Haughey the former Irish Finance Minister was indicted on charges of conspiracy to smuggle weapons into Ireland. He would be acquitted on all charges.
