Sun Sounds- “Good Rockin’ Tonight”- Elvis Presley. “Good Rockin’ Tonight” was the second Elvis release at Sun- on September 22, 1954. The original written by Roy Brown was a jump blues song which many cite as an a potential candidate for the first ‘rock and roll song.” Brown’s version went to #13 on the R&B singles chart but he was outdone by Wynonie Harris’s cover which became a #1 R&B hit. Elvis’s version is much closer to the Brown original than the Harris cover. He was backed as usual by Scotty Moore on electric guitar and Bill Black on the double bass. The b-side of the single was “I Don’t Care If The Sun Don’t Shine.”
Elvis was extraordinary. My mother loved his songs.
I featured this one. Kinda near the beginning of something big. Scotty and the boys lay it down.
