“Mandy” was originally released in 1970 and made the Top 20 in the UK as “Brandy” by Scott English. In 1974 Barry Manilow recorded and released it and it became the first of three #1 hits he would have in his career. The title was changed from Brandy to Mandy- at the suggestion of Clive Davis- due to the name Brandy being used in Looking Glass’s #1 hit “Brady {You’re A Fine Girl}

I don’t know what it was about America at this period of time and the mellow sounds they seemed to be liking.
