Sun Sounds- “Down By The Riverside”- Million Dollar Quartet. Yesterday I wrote about December 4, 1956 at Sun Studio in Memphis- Carl Perkins was recording “Matchbox” with a young session man named Jerry Lee Lewis working on that recording. Later in the afternoon a fella named Elvis Presley- who was in town- dropped in. At some point Johnny Cash who had a few country hits at this time and Elvis was a superstar. They started an impromptu jam session -none of this was planned. Jack Clement who was engineering that day- started to record them- just four guys having fun doing what they loved doing.
The recordings wouldn’t be released until 1981 in Europe- which contained 17 songs. Over the years more material was discovered from the session and more releases followed. Here is one of my favorites from the jam session- Down By The Riverside.
