I knew this was a big hit for Harry Chapin but I didn’t realize that it went all the way to #1. Chapin was nominated for a Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for “Cat’s In The Cradle” and the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2011. The song was co-written with Harry’s wife Sandra- and was inspired by the relationship between Sandra’s first husband and his father. Harry also said it was about his own relationship with his son Josh and once said about the song “Frankly, this song scares me to death.” Harry was known for his story songs- this is one of his best. I am sure there is a lot of truth in this song.

  1. This song makes me sad – I try to skip it whenever possible.

Both my parents are gone and I can not spend time with them again.
All the times I could have spent time with them – but didn’t. 😦

    • I understand those feelings. My father is gone and although I did spend a lot of time with him- I think- why didn’t I spend more.

  2. Around that time, some great tunesmiths came out of nowhere. Chapin, Croce, Fogelberg, and Cat Stevens a bit earlier. That song is sad, and when I hear it, I do think of my father. Our children grow into adults with lives of their own, and sometimes it’s hard to realize that. Chapin nailed it with that tune. Cat Stevens gave us ” Father and Son,” about the time the 60s turned us all into rebellious idiots. Good post, good article.
