Sun Sounds- “Raunchy”- Bill Justis. Bill Justis grew up in Memphis and studied music in college. He was a saxophone and trumpet player. In 1951 he was taken in by Sam Phillips at Sun and not only recorded music on the Sun label but arranged music for some of the great artists at Sun including Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash and an artist he is credited to have discovered- Charlie Rich. “Raunchy” which was released in 1957 was the first rock and roll instrumental hit- it would be Justis only Top 40 hit but it was a memorable one.
One of my all-time favorites.
I am not much for instrumentals but this is a great one. I agree.
I just listened to this today Han and checked to see if we were in sync. We are.
I don’t think I ever knew the name of this song. Wow! It’s one of the best.
