Hans Remembers- Monday October 5, 1970- 50 Years Ago.
- The 1970 World Series is set- in the American League the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Minnesota Twins- sweeping the three game series and in the National League the Cincinnati Reds did the same to the Pittsburgh Pirates sweeping all three of the best of five series. The Reds and the Pirates would dominate the National League in the 70’s with the Reds going to four World Series and the Pirates two. The Reds and the Pirates in the 70’s were the only teams in the National League to win World Series- both won two.
- The Public Broadcasting System began broadcasting. It replaced the National Educational Television NET on NET stations in the U.S. PBS would introduce U.S. viewers to the BBC’s 13 part Civilisation [that’s how they spell it across the pond.} Sesame Street and The French Chef had already begun under the NET.
- French diplomat James “Jasper” Cross was kidnapped by the Front de liberation duu Quebec who demanded the release of 23 imprisoned FLQ members. The Canadian government rejected the demand. The release of Cross would be successfully negotiated two months later on December 3rd in return for allowing FLQ members to be flown to Cuba without being prosecuted criminally.
