Ranking Bob Dylan’s 39 Studio Albums- #30: Triplicate -released March 31, 2017. 3 stars.

The countdown so far 39- Dylan -1973 38- Down In The Groove -1988 37-Knocked Out Loaded- 1986 36-Christmas In The Heart- 2009 35-Under A Red Sky- 1990 34-Saved- 1980 33-Fallen Angels 2016 32- Good As I Been To You- 1992 31- World Gone Wrong 1993 30- Triplicate 2017.

Triplicate is a triple album- and for the third album in a row Bob Dylan raids the Great American Songbook. If you are following the countdown you probably see a pattern of late- the last four albums have been albums where Bob covers others songs- in Good As I Been To You- and World Gone Wrong- old folk songs and in Fallen Angels and Triplicate- old standards from the Great American Songbook. I like all of those albums by the way its just that I like even what is considered an average to above average album of Dylan originals to covers. There are still a couple cover albums to go in the count down.

Triplicate again is a triple album- each disc is about 32 minutes in length 10 songs on each disc for 30 total. The discs are thematically arranged in 10 song sequences. It is an enjoyable album to me to listen to- but it was the third album in a row from Dylan of covers from the Great American Songbook. His last album of originals was 2012. I think this theme had run its course now. Would Dylan ever at this point- approaching eighty- ever release another album of Dylan songs? With Bob you just never know. In 2020 he would. Triplicate would peak at #37 in the Billboard 200 album chart and #17 in the UK album chart.

  1. I haven’t heard as much of this as I should have…I’ve heard quite a bit of Shadows in the Night…I need to catch up with this one.

I just commented on Stephen’s pick…we were questioning if he would ever come out with something original again….twice he has done this.
