Hans Remembers- Monday September 28, 1970- 50 Years Ago.
- Gamal Abdel Nasser- the longtime President of the United Arab Republic {Egypt}- died of a heart attack at the age of 52. The 1970 Arab League summit in Cairo had just concluded and Nasser had bit farewell to Kuwait’s Emir Sabah Al- Salim Al-Sabah at the Cairo airport when he became ill. He was met at his home by physicians where he suffered a myocardial infarction from a coronary thrombosis. He was pronounced dead at 6:15 pm. His Vice President Anwar Sadat succeeded him as president.
- Three hours after the Empire State Building’s lights were turned off a large flock of birds were killed after crashing into the building. An estimated 150 migrating starlings struck the 102 story building and plunged to their deaths- littering 5th Avenue and 34th Street.
- For the 73rd consecutive time The United States won yachting’s America’s Cup- Intrepid piloted by Bill Ficker finished ahead of Australia’s Gretel II to win the best-of-seven series four races to one.
- Historian and novelist John Dos Passos died at the age of 74.
The Empire State Building thing confuses me. Were the lights just turned off that day or did the lights get turned off every day?
Hmm.. that is a good question.
It’s a head-scratcher.
